How interesting. My Northern Irish other half routinely uses the word grip in this way and across the island of Ireland a cupboard is a press. When I moved to the UK I caused much confusion by referring to the ‘airing-cupboard’ above the hot water boiler as the ‘hot press’. And what a great photo.
I'm glad to know that grip and press have not gone out of usage in Ireland. My grandfather's grandfather came over from Belfast so now I know where those words came from. The closets in the old farmhouse were wide enough, but not more than a foot deep, which meant things could only be hung on the back wall, perhaps giving new meaning to the term press as in "flatten." Airing cupboard is entirely new to me - had to look it up. This is a little like foraging, for words instead of berries.
By the way I was so inspired by your marmalade that, having no Seville oranges, I made blackberry jam from the small amount of berries I picked last summer before the drought hit. Super good. I hope for a better harvest this year so I can make more.

A grip in a press. I learned two new things this morning! Love the photo.
